When is it possible to go to Trolltunga?
This depends on snow and weather conditions, and will vary one year from the other.
In a normal year:
- 1st July to 31st August: snow free, recommended time to go
- 15th June – 15th September: ok to go
- 19th March – 15th October: ok to go with local guide (with snowshoes or ski in spring)
- 16th October – 18th March: NOT possible. Highly dangerous.
About the hike to Trolltunga
- The trail starts in Skjeggedal, 7 km from Tyssedal
- It is a very demanding hike: 23 km (return), approximately 10 -12 hours (return). Ascent about 900 meters
- Start early in the morning, so you will return before darkness. It is earlier dark in August and September.
- The weather in the high mountains may change fast, check the weather forecast before going. Do not go in heavy rain or foggy weather.
- It is much colder in the mountains then down by the fjord.
- There is NO mobile phone coverage on large parts of the hike.
- It is normally safe to drink water in Norwegian mountains, but please avoid this along the trail to Trolltunga, as many people visit the area.
What to bring with you on the hike
- Bring food and water
- Bring a tent if you wish to stay overnight by Trolltunga.
- Suitable clothing: warm, wind and waterproof clothing, good hiking boots.
- Torch and simple first aid kit.
- Bring all garbage back with you.

How to get to Skjeggedalen
- By car: Parking in Skjeggedalen (NOK 200 a day), or Tyssohallen (NOK 100 a day), or Odda (free parking) Shuttle bus/Taxi services from parking to the start of the trail.
- By public transport:Bus 990 Voss-Odda will take you from Voss, Kinsarvik, Lofthus to Odda (or Tyssedal) from where you can take the shuttle to Skjeggedal, where the hike starts.Bus 90 Utne-Odda will take you from Utne, Aga, Nå to Odda from where you can take the shuttle to Skjeggedal, where the hike starts.
