Some 4-5 km north of Utne, the Magistrate's House is beautifully situated on the Hardangerfjord. The white wooden house was built in 1723, and extended over the course of the 18th century. With distinct architectural features it is one of few remaining authentic houses in Hardanger of that period.
Originally built as a magistrate's dwelling, it was later used as poorhouse, and also housed an agricultural school before it eventually became a residence for artists. The building was declared a protected monument in 1932 by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage.
