Tyssevassbu is situated 1319 masl in Hardangervidda National Park, about 4-5 hours walk from Trolltunga, and a long full day’s hike from Skjeggedalen (Tyssedal). It is the lodge which is closest to Trolltunga (Reinaskårsbu is now closed). Tyssevassbu is operated by the Norwegian Trekking Association/Oslo. It is a self service lodge with 12 beds. Self service implies that the visitors themselves are responsible for cooking, cleaning, fetching water and keeping things tidy. There is food supply for sale, visitors do not have to bring any food. Payment is according to a price list (cash or by filling in a form with payment details). Tyssevassbu is one of few lodges in Hardangervidda equipped with electricity. The Norwegian Trekking Association’s universal key is necessary to enter the lodge. The key can be obatained at the tourist offices (deposit NOK 100).
Note that Hardangervidda is snow free in July and August, and hiking during the rest of the year is hazardous. Always check the weather forecast before hiking in Hardangervidda. Bring warm clothes (also in summer), and never go without a topographical hiking map and compass. In most areas of Hardangervidda there is no mobile phone coverage.
